PONYTAILS SHETLAND PONY STUD INTRODUCTION Ponytails breed standard and miniature SHETLAND PONIES.  Our ponies are quality bred horses and have exceptionally good temperaments. All of our ponies are registered with the Australian Pony Stud Book (APSB), and ponies under 87cms are dual registered with the APSB and Australian Miniature Pony Society (AMPS).

SHETLAND PONY ORIGINS  The Shetland pony is a breed of small horse originating in the Shetland Isles after which they were named.  The Shetland archipelago is located 100  kms (62 miles) north of mainland Scotland.
	SCENERY SURROUNDING OUR SHETLAND PONY STUD Highlands is a distinctive part of Victoria known for its breath taking scenery, rocky outcrops, chilly winters and wind swept hills.  The first settlers to the area shared a common ancestry and many of the roads surrounding the district have Scottish names.  On crisp Autumn mornings in Highlands the rugged landscape is often encased in a sea of fog which surrounds the valleys below and one could easily be forgiven for imagining they were in the Scottish Isles. The Shetland Islands which form part of the rugged Scottish coastline, are also known for their rough, rocky land and cold, harsh weather.
Our Shetland Ponies thrive in countryside similar in winter climate and topography to the homeland they originated from, although spring and summer temperatures are much warmer in Highlands than the Shetland Isles. Spring is a magnificent time of the year in Highlands and pasture growth is usually quite lush, staying green and sweet until late December in a good season. Despite the inclement weather patterns of the past few years where climate change has brought drought conditions to many areas of Victoria, Highlands has enjoyed good rainfall generally and is famous for its abundance of springs and bogs. Highlands also has cooler summer temperatures because of its height above sea level. Our Shetland Pony Stud is nestled amongst picturesque rolling hills bounded by Waggs Ranges and Granite Hills and is conveniently located a relatively short distance (25 kilometer drive) from either Seymour or Yea accessed by sealed roadways. An abundance of wildlife can often be seen along the drive, including koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, echidnas, as well as various species of wonderful Australian birds indigenous to our Region and which number amongst them the Wedge-tailed Eagle.
